I know you need a gold account to play a 360 game on xbox live but what about an original xbox game? Can you play those with the xbox live silver account. I was so glad to find this — No you cannot play original or 360 games on Xbox Live with a silver account. Silver accounts allow you to access the marketplace to download content and the silver accounts don't cost anything. You need a Gold account to access online multiplayer.
